Most vehicles age well , with care and maintenance. But, one area of the car that is not typically cared for is the dashboard and most importantly, the air vents. A couple of things happen over time and you can avoid big repair and replacement fees with a little preventive maintenance.
One , maintain the air vents . From steady use , air vents sometimes become less functional and don’t operate like the original. A more severe issue comes from excessive heat in the cabin ,and sometimes the air vent slightly warps and that can cause friction and not allow the vent to be directed with the vent tab. You’ll notice a stiffening of the louvers ( the plastic blades inside the air vent assembly) . You can do one of two things : 1) DIY replace the vent for $40-150 or have the dealer replace the vent for $250-400. 2) Replace the vent tab for less than $20 and make sure the louvers are in their right track and not warped . While you’re at it , clean the air vent with a brush or a vacuum.
Two , the dashboard may have warped or distorted , forcing the air vent to raise off the dashboard. The dashboard material (usually plastic + foam + vinyl) expands, dries out, and warps, which can lift vents or misalign ducting. We would recommend not forcing or hammering the front of the vent because it might fracture or break the air vent.
· Remove vent trim (usually snaps out with trim tools)
· Re-seat clips and duct connection
· Use:
o Automotive epoxy OR
o High-temp silicone adhesive
Cost:
· DIY: $10–$40
· Shop: $75–$200
Pay attention this vital area of your vehicle and you’ll avoid big bills later .
